The Impact of ONDC on Indian E-Commerce Logistics, and How to Join

The Indian government introduced the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), transforming the digital commerce in India into an open, interoperable model that links buyers, sellers, logistical providers, and technologists across platforms and, in doing so, displaces the dominance of large aggregators. Small businesses are exposed to more and charged more, branded and controlled customer data, more particularly to remote or underserved areas.

Enhancing final mile connectivity

ONDC improves logistics accessibility, such as last-mile delivery, by incorporating tech-focused players in the logistics industry including Shipsy, and improves efficiency with real-time tracking, route optimization, and automated communications. Large logistics companies are also becoming part of the network: Ekart (a logistics division of Flipkart) recently launched on ONDC, which allows it to offer transparent delivery services to a larger number of vendors. Likewise, Allcargo Gati has joined ONDC to go digital and facilitate access to the inclusive supply chain. It has also been reported that big players like Xpressbees are active logistics partners on the network.

Such trends are making the Indian e-commerce logistics ecosystem inclusive, decentralized, and economical enough to empower the MSMEs and create resilience.

How to Join ONDC: Step-by-Step Guide

Overview of Process

The process of joining ONDC involves role selection, integration, compliance, and certification. The participants may become sellers, buyers, technology providers or provide other services such as dispute resolution services or gateways.

Step-by-Step Method

  1. Sign up on ONDC Portal
Begin by creating your profile on the ONDC participant portal and access initial learning materials.  www. ondc.org
  2. Participate in Webinars and Briefings
Experience business and technical orientation sessions to be introduced to the functionality and API structure of ONDC.
  3. Select Your Role & Domain
Decide whether to join as a seller, buyer, service provider (e.g., inventory-based seller, marketplace-builder, gateway provider), or multiple roles, based on your capabilities.
  4. Meet Compliance & Certification Criteria
Make sure you are registered in India, have PAN/TAN. Depending on the position, e.g. the gateways must be independent. You may also consider taking the DigiReady Certification, a self-certification exam by Quality Council of India, to certify your readiness to go digital and simplify the process of onboarding.
  5. Integrate via APIs and Test
Develop your interface using ONDC APIs and test thoroughly in staging, pre-production, and live environments.
  6. Go Live
When it is built, tested, and integrated, you may go live on the ONDC network and begin trading with buyers or sellers between platforms.

For Sellers Specifically

  • Register via an ONDC Seller App: Fill in details like business GSTIN, PAN, bank details, address proofs, and cancelled cheque. Expect KYC approval in 2–3 business days.
  • List Products: Upload your catalog, pricing, and descriptions on the seller app to kickstart visibility on buyer apps.
  • Choose the Right App: Opt for apps with strong logistic support, multilingual interfaces, robust security, and prompt onboarding.

Final Thoughts

ONDC is bringing a new age of inclusivity and equality in Indian electronic commerce logistics. It gives local retailers more power, increases MSME involvement, and makes it easy to access digital infrastructure. Integration is an easy exercise with well-organised processes, role descriptions and certification possibilities that make it attractive to large and small enterprises.
