Long Drives, Less Sleep? Simple Tips for Indian Truckers to Rest Well

The invisible lifeline of the Indian supply chain is a group of truck drivers. They drive through busy roads, bad climatic conditions, and uncertain road situations in order to keep the economy moving. However, there are an increasing number of health risks behind the wheel in the form of sleep deprivation. As more than 8 million truckers cover thousands of kilometers in a month, they do not get sufficient rest, and it is becoming a silent crisis. Most of the truckers have to sleep in barbarous conditions, under time pressure, and their unstable working schedule keeps the body out of its normal rhythm. The result? Accidents connected with fatigue, deterioration of mental condition, and impaired quality of life.

In a 2024 study by the All India Motor Transport Congress, it was found that close to 60 percent of Indian truckers do not get more than 5 hours of undisturbed sleep during trips. According to Dr. Anil Mehta, an occupational health expert in Delhi, sleep is not a luxury for drivers; rather, it is a necessity. Long-distance drives with little rest affect alertness, reaction time, and judgment. This not only exposes the driver to danger but also endangers other commuters.

However, rest should not be too complex. By simply knowing a bit more and making lifestyle adjustments, truckers can do considerably more to promote their rest and recovery on the road.

5 Simple, Sleep-Friendly Habits for Indian Truckers

Take Power Naps

It can be a 20–30 minute nap before driving off on a long haul or during a day break. It assists in rejuvenating the brain and helps avoid micro-sleep episodes, which are very fatal on the road.

Eat Light Before Sleeping

The food served at the dhabas beside the roads might be spicy and greasy which might lead to cases of indigestions, thus compromising the quality sleep. Lighter food like roti-sabzi or fruits should be consumed before resting period, that will

make the process of digestion easier and help to sleep much better.

Create a Comfortable Sleep Zone in the Truck

It is not uncommon to sleep well on a loud road using cheap appliances like blackout curtains, fans that generate ventilation, neck pillow, and earplugs. These assist in making sleeping to be quiet irrespective of the noise.

Stick to a Sleep Routine

Although drivers take breaks in limited durations, keeping a regular time for naps and deep sleep patterns can help the body learn to wind down quickly. This contributes to developing a circadian rhythm even on off-schedule routes.

Reduce Stimulant Use Before Rest

Chai, coffee, and tobacco are generally used to combat sleepiness; however, these must be avoided at least 2–3 hours prior to the intended rest time so as not to promote interrupted or superficial sleep.

Industry Response and Initiatives

The latest companies to lead the industry, such as BlackBuck and Rivigo, pay particular attention to the well-being of drivers. “We have implemented driver rest points along the largest number of routes as well as introduced compulsory rest period windows following lengthy hours on the road,” says Nalin Kumar, Head of Driver Welfare at Rivigo.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways is contemplating legal provisions that will require mandatory rest hours for long-distance drivers. Officials have proposed rest stops along highways and pod arrangements where truckers can sleep comfortably.

Final Word

More than applause like the one seen and heard in India, the truckers of India need rest, dignity, and protection. Comfortable sleep improves lives, but it also saves lives. These are only a few simple efforts individuals can make and wellness-first policies India can adopt to keep drivers safe, alert, and ready to roll on the road.
