Kerala Signs ₹2,000 Crore Logistics Pacts to Boost Vizhinjam Port

In faster development of infrastructure surrounding the Vizhinjam International Seaport, the Kerala government has entered into logistic agreements to the tune of 2,000 crore. According to The Hindu, the agreements are with central public sector enterprises and are aimed at forming an entire logistics ecosystem around the port.

The report showed that the investments would include bunkering facilities, warehousing infrastructure, and multimodal connectivity enhancements. The state government is said to consider the port as a long term maritime entrance which has the capacity to attract shipping lines internationally.

Towards a Competitive Maritime Hub.

Additional reporting by ET Infra indicated that the plans are meant to convert Vizhinjam to a transshipment and logistic hub on the southern coast of India. As the publication observed, expansion of infrastructure would enhance the capability in handling cargo and avoid reliance on transshipment ports abroad.

In the meantime, Veloxx Media pointed out that improved rail and road connections would be of the essence in helping expand the port in the long term. Analysts are of the opinion that the competitiveness of the port with regard to the regional maritime trade will be decided by the coordinated investment in storage, fuel supply and container movement infrastructure.

Analysts suggest that the strategic positioning of Vizhinjam close to major global shipping outlets has a massive potential. Nonetheless, it will need long-term policy endorsement, an effective implementation process, and a connection to internal logistics systems. When done well, the 2000 crore investment would help Kerala to take advantage as a major player in the changing maritime logistics environment in India.
