Indian Railways Launches Green Initiative to Transport Fly Ash Through Dedicated Rail Network

The Indian government has declared a major step towards the development of a cleaner and more circular economy, by announcing plans to move fly ash, one of industry’s biggest by-products, across the country on the rails. The concept was put forward by the Union Minister for Railways Shri Ashwwin Vaishnaw in a review meeting aimed at facilitating the movement of fly ash from thermal power plants in large quantities to industries for various applications such as the construction of roads, brick production, cement making and infrastructure development in the country. Also, Union Ministers of State for Railways, Shri V. Somanna and Shri Ravneet Singh Bittu attended the meeting.

Annually, thermal power plants produce almost 340 million tonnes of fly ash. For decades, this huge amount of gray particulate matter has been collected around the power plant sites, which have caused huge threats and hazards to the environment and human health. With this new initiative, the goal is to turn that around and establish a special logistics infrastructure, including special containers and railways to transport the material from the generation to the consumption industries.

The rationale behind the circular economy of the initiative is simple: the fly ash, when being moved correctly and utilized in a suitable way, is a raw material for cement, concrete, blocks and boards. The reduced cost of fly ash translates to inexpensive bricks, reduced cement costs and therefore inexpensive housing in both urban and rural India.

A reliable and cheap supply chain for fly ash, transported by rail, will help alleviate the cost of raw materials for cement and brick manufacturers, The Economic Times has said. The Hindu BusinessLine has, earlier, reported that efficient use of fly ash is an integral part of India’s targets to achieve green infrastructure as part of its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

The transport network that is built on the railways, therefore, is solving an environmental challenge and an economic opportunity at the same time. Fly ash will be packed in a rail wagon and dedicated logistics system, and will move from one place to another without causing any pollution — instead, as a part of the Indian infrastructure narrative. This was presented as the “grammar of a true circular economy” in which industrial waste becomes a welcomed component of the country.
