Gradual Fall of Ecommerce to the Rise of Hyperlocal Delivery (Quick Commerce) – Detailed Opinion

Food, clothing, books, vegetables, and fruit are delivered to our house within minutes of placing an order in today’s world. The world as we know it today would cease to exist without door-to-door delivery as we obtain through the help of various applications. Even as platforms such as Amazon, Flipkart, and Snapdeal, to name a few, are among the biggest giants in the e-commerce business, hyperlocal delivery is becoming preferred by people more and more.

The e-commerce industry can be considered a trustworthy precursor to the hyperlocal delivery system, wherein they provide the customer with their desired items quickly and within a specific geographical context. While e-commerce sites tend to look into the more particular consumer needs, hyperlocal delivery sites will provide the customer with necessary and emergency requirements.

Understanding the Fall of E-commerce Sites and Rise of Hyperlocal Delivery

Popular e-commerce sites in India have been in parlance for a long time. Apparel, clothing, books – all items were available on these sites and could be delivered to the customer within a few days or weeks. The customers are given an array of choices from which they can select. These e-commerce businesses would often take a few days or even a day to deliver the items. One of the most significant advantages of e-commerce sites is that they allow for items to be delivered within all the regions in the country.

With the break of the pandemic, “hyperlocal” delivery gained momentum. The hyperlocal delivery model operates within a small geographical arena and delivers the items within a very short period of time, a maximum of half an hour. When people were stuck in their houses during the pandemic and could not go out to buy even the most necessary items, hyperlocal delivery systems gained popularity amongst people.

While the e-commerce sites tend to provide customers with appliances or items that are not required on an emergency basis, the hyperlocal delivery system started providing customers with the most basic items – rice, vegetables, notebooks, or even spices. As the pandemic ended and everything returned to normalcy, there was a spurt of hyperlocal delivery systems.

Companies such as BlinkIt, Swiggy Instamart, BigBasket, and Zepto started coming up in the business landscape, all with the same promise – to provide customers with what they want within a few minutes of delivering their orders. Thus, individuals would no longer have to count days for the arrival of their items as only with a few clicks on the screen would their desired item be dropped home. This also led to the hyperlocal delivery sites now including a broader range of items than before.

Why This Change?

As per a report published in The Economic Times in 2021, almost 46% of Indians today expect their delivery to reach their doorstep within two hours. In such a scenario, e-commerce businesses are bound to decline when quick commerce or hyperlocal delivery assures their customers of quick doorstep delivery. Even if hyperlocal delivery systems have a narrower choice of heavy appliances and luxurious items, they have broadened their selection now.

One can buy items like bouquets, chargers, and expensive makeup on BlinkIt. At the same time, hyperlocal delivery sites such as Zepto also provide consumers with a choice to purchase food from their site with the opening of the Zepto Café.

Even as it is challenging to point out one reason which may have heralded this change, there could be a few reasons which can be regarded as the reason for this shift to hyperlocal delivery systems :

Consumer Behaviour

Whether in how we consume content over social media applications or how we want our items to be delivered, the consumer in today’s world appreciates speed over any other criteria. Consumers would now want their desired item to reach them in the shortest period, a reality that the hyperlocal delivery systems make possible.

Lifestyle Change

More and more people are now opting for remote work, meaning they spend most of their time in their house. In urban India, many of the population has access to smartphones and internet. In the last few years, a significant part of the population has also adopted the digital form of payment. All of these changes have, in some way or another, helped in the growth of hyperlocal forms of delivery.

Conclusion

Even as the hyperlocal form of delivery is becoming the mainstay in the country now, e-commerce sites shall continue to flourish as they are the only form of delivery system in the country now that can reach even the remotest corner of the city. The hyperlocal delivery system will continue to flourish in the urban setting with the promise of fast delivery and the wide range of services being offered by the companies.
