What’s CBM in Logistics? How to Calculate It? (Perfectly Explained with Examples)

In the realm of logistics and freight hauling, CBM or Cubic Meter plays a very important role in identifying the amount of space that your freight consumes in a shipping container. It is a significant factor when it comes to determining shipping prices, particularly when it comes to LCL (Less than Container Load) shipments, since in that case, you are often charged depending on volume instead of weight.

What is CBM?

When the size of a shipment is to be described, a volume measurement is employed, which is denoted as CBM (Cubic Meter). A cube that has one meter as the dimension in three directions would have a volume of one cubic meter. It is regarded as an international standard measure of space consumed by the cargo.

This is especially true in sea and air transportation, where rates are charged per space and not necessarily per weight.

What is the significance of CBM in Logistics?

  • Freight Cost Estimation – Shipping firms charge by volume (CBM) on bulk products which are not heavy but take up a lot of space.
  • Container Optimization – Aids in determining what can be placed into a regular consuming container (e.g. 20 ft, 32, 40 ft).
  • Efficiency – Helps in improved space utilization during packaging, warehousing, and transportation.

Calculation of CBM
The formula of CBM is very easy to get:
CBM = Length × Width × Height
Ensure before conversion that all dimensions are measured in meters (m).
In case you have your products in centimeters (cm), you should convert your figures to meters first by dividing them by 100.

 

CBM Calculation Example 1 – Single Package
Let us assume that you are given a box that has the following dimensions:
Size: 120 cm
Width: 80 cm
Height: 60 cm

Take into meters:
Length = 1.2 m
Width = 0.8 m
Height = 0.6 m

Now use the formula:
CBM = 1.2 (0.8) (0.6) = 0.576 CBM

With that, one box would occupy 0.576 cubic meters.

 

Example 2 – CBM Calculation of Multiple Identical Packages
Assuming that you have 10 identical boxes and the length breadth depth are:

 Length: 50 cm = 0.5m

W = 40 cm = 0.4 m

1: Height: 30 cm = 0.3 m

CBM /box = 0.5 2

CBM of 10 boxes = 0.06 10 = 0.6 CBM

That way, you will use 0.6 CBM on cumulative shipment.

CBM Conversion (for reference)
The following is the CBM (Cubic Meter) conversion:

  • One centimeter (cm) = 0.01 meters (m)
  • 0.0254 meters (m) = one inch
  • The conversion of one foot (ft) to meters (m) = 0.3048
  • They can make use of these values to make conversions to meters when computing CBMs.

CBM of Cylindrical Goods
In cylindrical cases, such as drums or rolls:
CBM = (22/7) × (Radius)² × Height
In case the radius and the height are in meter, then the calculated CBM would also be cubic meter.
