To ship goods and shipments from one place to another, you will need different documents that facilitate the movement of goods across various transportation modes. Among all the important documents and bills, the Airway Bill, Bill of Lading, Eway Bill, and Roadway Bill have different purposes.

  1. Airway Bill or AWB

     

AWB is the transport document provided by the airline or air cargo carrier for the goods that are shipment via air freight. AWB is a non-negotiable document and it serves as a contract of carriage, air cargo tracking tool, and recipient of goods. It will be issued by airlines or their authorized agents. AWB does not provide ownership, the goods shall be delivered only to the mentioned consignee. You can use AWB in International and domestic air freight shipments. 

  1. Bill of Lading or BOL

     

BOL document issued by the shipping line that acknowledges the goods for shipment via inland waterways or seaways. BOL can be negotiable and non-negotiable, it serves as a contract of carriage, title of ownership, and receipt of goods. BOL can be issued by shipping carriers or freight forwarders. In legality BOL can be transferred to another party enabling trap finance transactions (if negotiable) BOL can be used in international sea freights and multimodal transportation. 

  1. Roadway Bill

     

The transport document that is issued to transport the goods by road. It is a non-negotiable document. It acts as proof of receipt and transport of goods by the carrier. Roadway bills will be issued by road transport companies or freight forwarders. In legal terms roadway bill does not transfer ownership goods will be delivered as per the mentioned consignee. It can be used in domestic and cross-border roadway transportation 

  1. E-Way Bill

The electronic document provided by tax authorities for goods movements under the GST regulation. By Nature, an e-way bill is a mandatory compliance document that ensures tax compliance and prevents tax evasion. It will be issued by the transporter or supplier via the government portal. in legal terms, it is not a contract but it is a regulatory requirement and mandatory for the moment of goods valued above a certain threshold within India.
